Fields marked with an asterisk hold dates or numbers. You can search for ranges of dates by entering one or both of 'Date from' and 'Date to' to find documents from a chosen period.
The database is not case sensitive.
If you search for
slave
for example, slave, slavery and slaves will automatically be returned.
You can search for a term, for example,
slave trade
. Note, the words have to appear consecutively in the subject entry to bring a return.
You can also search for words not listed consecutively by using the % sign. Note that
slave%Africa
will give a different result to
Africa%slave
.
Do be aware of variant spelling, for example: Behring = Bering, Roumania = Romania, as there is no thesaurus to cross reference.
